In Ouro Preto (meaning ´black gold´) we found and old inactive gold mine to explore. It only goes down about 100 meters or so. The town Ouro Preto gets it´s name because the gold excavated from this mine was found in deposits of iron, which gave the gold a black color on the surface when it was mined by slaves. The town is very colonial and has a mid 18th century feel to it. The cobble stone streets and narrow sidewalks are tricky to navigate and the hills make it all an aerobic exercise.
