We were recently afforded the opportunity to venture into the Andean highlands of Peru and explore its Inca ruins. Al’s side of the family came from New York to visit Machu Picchu and our humble abode in Lima. We had a pleasant time treating them to fine Limeñan cuisine, and we all also worked at a medical mission in Lima with the Christian Life Movement and medical professionals from the US, Canada, and Peru. Now that they have safely returned to the states, we are gearing up for the start of the school year in March. Pray for us.

The answer has several parts. It started with our love for South America from previous trips through the continent, and the rest is that the Lord has opened doors for us to teach at schools of the Sodalitium of Christian Life. We have been hired not just to teach our respective subjects in English, but also to evangelize the students and fellow teachers. It has been a difficult but blessed first year in Peru. We have had to overcome many challenges inherent to moving to a foreign country, but also have made many wonderful friendships with other young married couples. We have learned a lot about teaching, classroom management, cultural differences, and the need to remain strong in our prayer life and close to the Sacraments. With so much work, it has been all too easy to become a bit lazy in our spiritual life, and that is a constant struggle.

In our work with Onebillionstories, we remain committed to filming Catholic testimonies and publishing them on the website. With the addition of our new iMac computer, editing is now much faster and actually fun. Our biggest challenge right now is equipment. We don’t have a good camera, lighting or sound equipment. We know a few Sodaliths (consecrated lay men) that do have some filming equipment and they have been very generous to let us borrow it on several occasions. However, we would like to have a camera of our own and a Digital Voice Recorder to make filming much easier. Another thing that most certainly will help is that we hope to buy a car by next year so traveling to film stories will be easier and safer (carrying camera equipment on a crowded public bus is not always the smartest idea.) Another thing that we hope will help us to find, film and produce better quality videos more often is that next year Al is negotiating to only work 4 days a week at the school so he and I can each have at least 1 day off a week and dedicate more time to the Onebillionstories mission.

Please pray for us and if you are able, donate to the OBS mission. We can continue to reach the many searching souls on the internet with beautiful video, but we (the OBS Peru team) needs better film equipment. To all of our current donors, thank you for your generosity, we are praying for you and your intentions. Thank you for coming back to Onebillionstories.com, more updates coming to you in the coming months from Peru.

Teresópolis, Brazil — This is the story of Tiago, a young man from the Minas Gerais province of Brazil. It is a very honest account of his life and struggles with drug addiction. When we met Tiago, he was in his 10th month of a rehabilitation program with Fazenda da Esperanca, a very unique type of rehab. It helps people struggling with addictions recover focusing on rebuilding their sense of self worth, work ethic, and most importantly belief in Jesus Christ, the ultimate healer.

When he was growing up, he was very shy and always excluded by his peers. He felt very lonely and started to look for something to take away his shyness, something that would allow him to connect with others. When he was barely a teenager he began smoking and drinking, and by the age of 14 he was already using marijuana. At first it was great, everyone wanted to be around him, and he suddenly had many friends. He was no longer excluded and had a very busy social life. Soon however, marijuana was not enough. He started looking for something stronger, so he started using cocaine and amphetamines.

At this point his relationship with his family was bad, he didn’t want to see or talk to them and tried to go home only when everyone was asleep so he would not have to talk to anyone. He lied, manipulated, stole, and began selling some of his belongings to buy drugs. One day he came home and his mom asked him where he had been. He could not stand the life he was leading, and the fact that he had accomplished nothing meaningful in his life. So this time, he could not lie to his mom. He told her the truth and asked for help. He began by going into a more traditional rehab program in a hospital, but afterwards he fell back into his addiction. After a few years of getting clean then falling back into addiction, he and his family decided to send him to a Fazenda da Esperanza, one outside of the city of Rio de Janeiro in Teresopolis. Here they do not give him withdrawl pills, but teach him the value of honest work, of his own self worth and dignity, and about the good news of Jesus Christ, the only one that can truly take away his addiction. He has been at the Fazenda for 10 months and since arriving has converted to the Cathoilc faith, has made his First Communion and is studying the Youcat.

Tiago’s story is inspiring to anyone, especially those who have struggled with addiction. It is possible to overcome addiction with the transforming power of Christ and the truths contained in the Catholic Church. A special thanks must go out to the Fazenda and the MAP team for coordinating this amazing day of filming up in the hills of Brazil outside of Rio de Janeiro.

Through the pain of racing, the long hours of training, and the daily discipline for food, sleep, and stretching, Brad Seng has honed his talents as a triathlete through a couple hidden training secrets. Perhaps the world was unaware before, but now they know, it is faith in Jesus Christ that often brings Brad up and over the challenging moments as an endurance athlete. Sacred Scripture, coupled with the Sacraments, especially confession and the eucharist, are all divine ingredients for his game plan in life. Did we mention he is a chastity speaker as well? Yes, when he is not out bicycling a hundred miles, or soaking his tired legs in an ice bath, Brad is traveling all across Colorado and the country speaking on chastity. As explained on his website, “…Brad also understands the importance of training his mind and heart in avoiding emotional & spiritual “junk food.”” Brad Seng is all about running the good race, both as a professional triathlete, and a follower of Jesus Christ. We all know the temptations that are in this world, and thankfully heroic athletes like Brad are toeing the line for truth in the 21st century. And we can all be thankful that the mini-van incident involving Brad left him unharmed, another affirmation that God has a special mission for Brad Seng.
