Teresópolis, Brazil — This is the story of Tiago, a young man from the Minas Gerais province of Brazil. It is a very honest account of his life and struggles with drug addiction. When we met Tiago, he was in his 10th month of a rehabilitation program with Fazenda da Esperanca, a very unique type of rehab. It helps people struggling with addictions recover focusing on rebuilding their sense of self worth, work ethic, and most importantly belief in Jesus Christ, the ultimate healer.

At this point his relationship with his family was bad, he didn’t want to see or talk to them and tried to go home only when everyone was asleep so he would not have to talk to anyone. He lied, manipulated, stole, and began selling some of his belongings to buy drugs. One day he came home and his mom asked him where he had been. He could not stand the life he was leading, and the fact that he had accomplished nothing meaningful in his life. So this time, he could not lie to his mom. He told her the truth and asked for help. He began by going into a more traditional rehab program in a hospital, but afterwards he fell back into his addiction. After a few years of getting clean then falling back into addiction, he and his family decided to send him to a Fazenda da Esperanza, one outside of the city of Rio de Janeiro in Teresopolis. Here they do not give him withdrawl pills, but teach him the value of honest work, of his own self worth and dignity, and about the good news of Jesus Christ, the only one that can truly take away his addiction. He has been at the Fazenda for 10 months and since arriving has converted to the Cathoilc faith, has made his First Communion and is studying the Youcat.
Tiago’s story is inspiring to anyone, especially those who have struggled with addiction. It is possible to overcome addiction with the transforming power of Christ and the truths contained in the Catholic Church. A special thanks must go out to the Fazenda and the MAP team for coordinating this amazing day of filming up in the hills of Brazil outside of Rio de Janeiro.

Na infância ele era muito tímido e sempre era excluído por seus colegas. Ele se sentia muito solitário e então começou a buscar por algo que o levasse a superar sua timidez, alguma coisa que o ajudasse um pouco mais a relacionar-se com outras pessoas. Quando tornou-se um adolescente ele começou a fumar e a beber e por volta dos 14 anos, já era usuário de maconha. No início era fantástico, todos queriam estar perto dele e de uma hora para outra passou a ter muitos amigos. Ele não era mais excluído e passou a ter uma intensa vida social. Entretanto chegou o momento que o efeito da maconha não era suficiente. Ele então começou a procurar por algo mais forte, e dai começou a usar cocaína e anfetaminas.
Neste ponto o relacionamento com sua família começou a ficar muito ruim, ele não queria ver ou falar com outras pessoas, por isso ele começou a voltar para casa tarde da noite quando todos estavam dormindo, porque dessa forma ele não precisava conversar com ninguém. Ele mentiu, manipulou, roubou e então começou a vender algumas de suas coisa para comprar drogas. Um certo dia ele voltou para casa e sua mãe lhe perguntou onde eu tinha ido. Naquele momento ele percebeu que não podia suportar este tipo de vida que estava levando, e que até então não tinha feita nada de significativo em sua vida. Dessa vez ele não contou a ela a verdade a respeito do que estava acontecendo e pediu ajuda. Ele começou a ir no mais tradicional programa de reabilitação num hospital, entretanto um pouco mais tarde ele acabou retornando mais uma vez ao vício. Depois de alguns anos sem fazer uso de drogas ele votou ao vício e sua família por fim decidiu envia-lo a Fazenda Esperança, em Teresópolis, cidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Aqui eles não lhe davam pílulas, mas ensinaram-lhe o valor do trabalho honesto, de sua autoestima e dignidade, e sobre a boa nova de Cristo, o único que verdadeiramente poderia resgatá-lo das drogas. Ele tem vivido na Fazenda Esperança por 10 meses e desde que chegou se converteu ao catolicismo, fez a primeira comunhão e tem estudado o YouCat.
A história de Thiago tem inspirado a muitas pessoas, especialmente aqueles que lutam por vencer o vício das drogas. É possível livrar-se do vício com o poder transformador de Cristo e das verdades que ensina a Igreja Católica.
