It reminds me of the tension I have in my own life, the tension between sanctity and sinfulness. The tension enables the watch to do what it’s supposed to do. It’s made for one reason, it’s made to mark time. I’m made for one reason too, we’re all made for the purpose of getting to God.” – Richard

Since launching the business, our parents have played a big role. They would get nervous when I said: ‘Geoffrey’s going to quit graduate school and do woodworking full-time.’ So we had tell our parents, ‘well you raised us this way, to value our family and faith, and to put that first.’ My first shop was in my parent’s basement, where they had to listen to the machines all the time. They would stay up until one in the morning sometimes helping me finish a table.”

It was 1949, in Denver Colorado, during the Polio epidemic when Mary Jane was stricken with bulbar polio, at that time a deadly disease. She was placed in a large machine called an “iron lung” that helped her to breathe and stay alive. Despite the doctors best efforts, the iron lung was shut off on August the 15th, 1949. Mary Jane was pronounced dead.

That same morning, Mary Jane’s parents attended Mass to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption, during which, they placed a dozen white roses at the altar of the Blessed Mother. Upon returning to the hospital and hearing the news of Mary Jane’s death, Mary’s mother Cleva, replied, “No, she isn’t.” Cleva bent down over Mary Jane, kissed her on the forehead, and said, “Mary, open your pretty blue eyes, I haven’t seen them yet this morning.” Mary Jane heard the words of her mother Cleva, and opened her eyes.

During the time of Mary Jane’s death experience, she encountered our Lord and His Blessed Mother. She felt the warmth of their love all around, and humbly offered herself to them and committed to pray the rosary everyday of her life in thanksgiving for the many gifts God had given her. A commitment she has upheld since that very day.

Several years later, Mary Jane would meet the “perfect partner,” and together they have cherished the gift of their Catholic faith by praying the rosary together everyday.

Skip Rodgers is a man on a mission: to raise awareness about the Christian genocide happening right now in the Middle East. As we have all seen in the news over the past 24 months, the situation in the Middle East has deteriorated quickly. The march against Christianity and it’s ancient roots in the greater area has spread rapidly. The cries of our brothers and sisters are not being answered by the larger global community. But rather than sit on the sidelines and complain about it, Skip Rodgers has taken the situation into his own hands. He is pedaling across the United States of America to raise awareness about the genocide happening before our very eyes. He is taking a stand, and he invites all of you watching this video to take a stand with him.

The “Ride for Hope and Mercy” should spread far and wide within the greater Christian communities across the United States. Please spread this video to your family and friends. The cries of our brothers and sisters in the Middle East must be heard. Let us unite with them through Skip Rodger’s inspiring, challenging, and sacrificial bike ride across the country.

Support Skip’s ride at the link above. Donations are being accepted to directly support Christians in Lebanon whom are fleeing Syria and Iraq.

Early in life, Sarah Swafford learned that life was not easy, even from her early middle school experience. She even had to change schools in middle school because of the bullying that she faced at that stage of her life. Her Mom had the wise counsel to help her through these challenging times by sharing these words, “hurt people, hurt people.” People that are struggling often bring those struggles to other people. In this video, Sarah shares the reality of encountering a struggling culture, and how the words of Saint John Paul the Great, inspired her to give everything to God through: “Be not afraid.”

We invite you to share your thoughts on the video below in the comment section. How have you been challenged in your life? How do you think “emotional virtue” applies to your real world experience?

Learning to love winter can be a challenge for many people. The darkness, the cold, the quiet characteristics can feel daunting at times, and lonely. The winter of the seasons, and the winter of prayer, are often present in many lives. But without the winter, there would be no spring. When one takes to the wilderness, a unique encounter with humanity ensues, ourselves. Unlike the city-scapes, the wild landscapes of Colorado and beyond, evoke a reality that invites, and sometimes forces one to reconsider the path they’ve chosen.

Vulnerability with another can become the hallmark of all peoples, but especially for those who want to become fully alive in this world. Encounter the wild, encounter oneself, and encounter God, this is the hallmark of vulnerability in the 21st century.
