Our Day of Rest… Clonmacnoise

Posted by OneBillionStories.com in History, Our Day of Rest, Topics. No Comments

1st January

Irish Steve is at it again, this time visiting a 6th century ancient Catholic settlement. The date of establishment for Clonmacnoise was between 545 – 548 AD, when less than 10 men, including Saint Ciarán, began constructing the first church on the site, which was made of wood.

Today’s Story

This church was the first of many to be built on the site, which eventually became a center for Christian pilgrims and culture. People from all around Europe traveled to visit Clonmacnoise between the 6th and 12th centuries, at which time it began to see a decline.

Enjoy these images and music from Irish Steve as he continues his pilgrimage through the heartland of Catholic Ireland. Have a Catholic story to share in Ireland? E-mail steve@onebillionstories.com to set up the interview.
